Barry Hayes, whose funeral was last Monday, was actively involved as a trainer/driver between 1966 and 1979 and won some 36 races.
Three of those wins came in Metro Class races at Gloucester Park courtesy of horses called Young Wairaka, Kim Hanover and Woodside Pinto.
In January 1997 Barry’s only daughter Veronica died as a result of head injuries suffered in a race-fall at Northam and there is a plaque on the office wall at Gloucester Park marking her passing.
Barry Hayes was instrumental in the upgrading of the National Helmet Standards for harness racing drivers to mitigate against other parents having to go through the anguish that his family did.
